Designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Music in 2019, Sanandaj (Iran) has continued to developed a wide range of policies and initiatives to support and enhance its music and cultural industries. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city through a participatory and inclusive approach has leveraged its rich cultural potential to strengthen social ties amongst its inhabitants to bring them comfort and support.
Most recently, the city inaugurated the new design of one its main streets, known as the “Ferdowsi sidewalk”. In line with the local government’s urban development strategies, this major project is aimed at expanding and improving urban services for local inhabitants while creating a dedicated space for cultural and artistic events. The Ferdowsi sidewalk is foreseen to host various artistic street performances and provide a platform to broaden visibility and appreciation for local bands and musicians. This redevelopment also aims to encourage inhabitants to actively participate in the creative programmes of the city, as well as to foster social interactions and cohesion in public spaces through culture and creativity.
As a part of the city’s celebration of being designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, the city installed a plate on the Municipality building. A ceremony in the presence of government officials, the Mayor of Sanandaj and cultural practitioners, was organized to reiterate its commitment to the achievement of the UCCN’s mission and objectives, and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable development.

A reflection of the religious music festival

Reflecting the monastic music festival on UNESCO's international website

To support the creative and cultural sector, foster cultural diversity and encourage the inhabitants’ active participation in local creative programmes, Sanandaj (Iran), a UNESCO Creative City of Music, organized the Khaneghahi (mystic) music festival in November 2020.
The event gathered musicians and bands, from several Iranian cities, including Isfahan, a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
In addition, the city recently launched a webinar dedicated to the interlinkages between Creative Cities and emerging technologies. Renowned academicians from the fields of music, arts and culture, and representatives of creative and knowledge-based start-ups joined the event, along with Sanandaj and Bandar Abbas – a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
Based on Creative Cities’ experiences and good practices, the webinar invited the participants to discuss how emerging technologies and IT services can support cities in designing new policies in the concerned field as well as contribute to the achievement of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network’s objectives. Other discussed topics revolved around the growing scope of entrepreneurship in the music sector.

Nowrouz celebration was held for the first time in the Christmas night based on Iranian calender in the 22 Golan stadium. It was one of the most memorable cultural celebration that was held by participation of the citizens due to welcoming and widespread presence of people. This popular celebration was reflected highly and it created enjoyable moments and happy memories for the citizens. This celebration was held by numerous Kurdish music performance and capabilities of Kurdish artists were used.

This celebration is full of different programs and audience remained at the stadium from the end of ceremony despite the cold weather and saw these programs: performance of playing daf with a lot of Sanandaj youth, performance of classical and traditional music by skillful groups, 20 people simultaneous performance of Kurdish dance which is called “halparkeh” in Kurdish language and lecture of Dr. Asad Ardalan about Nowrouz celebration customs, performance of compound music (Diwan, Daf, and Tanbour), horsemanship ritual (maneuver of horsemen with genuine Kurdish horses), turning on the fire by 300 pupils and performance of Nowrouz songs and in the final lighting.

Kurdistan province has a rich historical and cultural background and diffrerent celebrations and rituals in the year. Respect to culture and civilization among people of Kurdistan is very significant and they maintain their genuineness with holding old and traditional rituals and they try to learn them to next generations with social, cultural, and religious concepts. Wide participation of citizens of Kurdistan in the celebrations Mowloud month of Mohammad prophet in the Rabiolaval month is a symptom of devotion to him. Kurdistan rituals are among the happiest ones in the Iran. Kurdistan people by holding some specific rituals like Mowloudikhani, Nowrouz celebration, wedding of Pirshalyar and Bookabarane-while maintaining this identity -invite Iranian and stranger tourists for looking and participation in this rituals. Enthusiats of Kurdistan art and culture, hold this ceremony by obtaining a licence from governmental adminestrations and with a lot of happy. Some of its specifications are wearing Kurdish dresses with happy colours, ritual and Kurdish dances with regular and rhythmic movements and performance music by Kurdish voice. Daf instrument in the past have had a very top status among people so that they did not touch it without ablution and if a daf was torn, they would say that it is has been martyred.

In the past, some players like Khalifeh Karim Safwaty, Khalife Mirza Aghe Ghowsi, and Khalife Samad Andalibi were from the most original and the most prolific players of Daf and they learnt this heritage to next generation. These old generation has learnt this instrument to young generation and they have developed it and new generation such as children of Andalibi and Kamkar in new fifty years can initiate daf instrument in the Iranian national music and make it one of the fixed instruments in the importarnt performance. There is a daf in the most Sanandaj houses and most of Kurdistan people are familiar to abbatial voices and rhythms. Playing daf is a very vital element of Mowloudikhani ceremony (Celebration of Mohammad prophet) with eulogy of Mohammad prophet which is played in the Rabilelaval month.
